Canterbury Golf Club

A countback was needed to decide the destiny of Canterbury's Seniors' Open title. And, by virtue of a better back nine, it was the home club's Danny Swan, playing off a handicap of 20, who took the honours with a score of 42 Stableford points.

Swan, who had birdies at the first and 13th holes, scored equal halves of 21 points and this was just enough to pip another Canterbury member, 22-handicap Ray Lloyd, who scored 22 points going out and 20 coming home.

One point back in third place was Bill Clark, this year's Seniors' vice-captain at Canterbury. Playing off 16, he opened his round with a blob and then repeated the score at the 18th. In between, a birdie and nine pars saw him chalk up a highly creditable 41 points.

Fourth, on 40 points, was Canterbury four-handicapper Stewart White, who went round in a level-par 71 with three birdies and 12 pars.

Best among the 91 visiting players who represented 26 clubs, was Eddie Mills, of Shooters Hill, who scored 37 points off his 16 handicap.
