PRESIDENT : Paul Blake
Paul has been a member of Canterbury Golf Club since 1961 which is the beginning of his golfing career. He currently plays off a handicap of 10 which he is constantly striving to improve. Paul has enjoyed his year of Captaincy during 1983 and took up office of President for the Club in 2011.
His professional career began in the sixties when he trained in hairdressing which he has been pursuing ever since. He has been running his own business in the area since 1971 which is now located in Canterbury. Apart from his hobby, Paul is a founder and supporter of the Acorn Charity and he received an MBE from the Queen in 1997 for his services rendered to the Charity which he still supports today.
CLUB CAPTAIN : Tony Wenham
Tony grew up in Canterbury and still lives locally. He used to caddy regularly at Canterbury Golf Club as a young lad which is how he got into golf.
Tony's career history stretched over 42 years working for Royal Mail before retiring and concentrating on his golf. At the height of his game he enjoyed a handicap as low as 4.9 and he still works hard at his game to maintain his single figure handicap of 8. Tony is also a competent photographer and has captured many happy occasions including weddings and birthday celebrations in his spare time.
As a dedicated golfer, Tony has always been involved in more ways than just playing the game and during his time at Here Bay Golf Club, he was Competition Secretary for over six years. Following his move to Canterbury Golf Club, he continued in his capacity as Competition Secretary and he has completed a spell of five years ensuring our golfers were well looked after.
Since being elected Vice Captain in 2012, Tony has remained involved in many aspects of the Golf Club and he is looking forward to adding his personal touch during his tenure as Captain to ensure our members and visitors enjoy their golf at all times.
LADIES CAPTAIN : Beverley McNeil
Beverley joined Canterbury Golf Club in 1993 and has spent many happy hours enjoying the course and the friendships made with fellow golfers in all sections of the Club. Beverley is married to Allan, lives in Wingham and has one daughter-Becky who lives in London.
Beverley’s background was in nursing and she worked for many years as a Theatre Sister with East Kent Hospitals NHS University Trust mainly at the Kent and Canterbury Hospital in Canterbury. She then moved into academia, working as a Lecturer and then Senior Lecturer with the Faculty of Health at Canterbury Christ Church University. Beverley became a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and also did Consultancy work most particularly for the Association for Perioperative Practice.
Having retired two years ago, Beverley is now in a position to be able to give something back to the Golf Club in return for the many years when she “rushed in” played her golf and “rushed out again!” Beverley has a tendency to want to “analyse” things! Uppermost in her mind at the moment is the question “with all this time on my hands-why isn’t the handicap improving?”
SENIORS CAPTAIN : Colin Dawson
Colin has played golf for over 45 years and joined Canterbury Golf Club in 2003 following a 12 year period of ‘non-golfing’ due to business commitments. Initially he played Saturday’s mornings only in a well established roll-up and finding the relaxed and friendly atmosphere of the Club to his liking extended his involvement to playing in weekend competitions wherever possible.
His background was initially in Sales & Marketing which developed into a 23 year spell in the attractions industry including an eight year period as Director/General Manager of Thorpe Park, one of the UK’s leading attractions.
He moved to Kent in 1996 to become Managing Director of Dreamland Leisure, operators of two amusement parks, a cinema and numerous seaside arcades. He lives in Westbere with his wife Jeanette and has two sons both employed in the music industry.
Since retiring in 2010 he has been a regular playing member of the Seniors Section and was elected Captain in 2013.
He was awarded an OBE in the Queens Birthday Honours in 2010 .
MENS VICE CAPTAIN : Hubert Whyte
Hubert Whyte, known commonly as Bert, is a native of Kent and spent most of his school summers working on Canterbury Golf Course.
Bert lives in Herne Bay and is married to Jayne, also Kent born, and they have four older children, 2 boys and 2 girls.
A career in communication technology allowed Bert the opportunity to travel the world including 6 years as CEO and President of a New York Stock Exchange listed company, namely Network Equipment Technologies. Located in Silicon Valley near San Jose Bert was able to enjoy golf on some of the world's most famous courses, typically under stunning blue skies.
Bert retired 5 years ago and has spent much of this time attempting, with some success, to improve his golf handicap.
As Vice Captain, he welcomes the opportunity to support the club's activities, particularly during this period of significant change.
LADIES VICE CAPTAIN : Christine Bowles
Christine Bowles is Canterbury born and bred, educated at Simon Langton Girls School and is married with 3 children. Christine's job history includes having worked as a Business Manager in Private Hospital and Executive Health Care insurance, as a Restaurant manager and finally working for 9 years in the Club Secretary’s office before retirement.
Christine's interests include traveling and cooking and taking up playing Golf has been quite recent which means Christine can identify with high handicappers and their needs. She is horoughly enjoying the challenges of improving her game and club life in general.
To be elected as Ladies Vice captain was a surprise and a great honour and she looks forward to making a worthwhile contribution in her official capacity!
